Kitesurfing Mavericks
"Jean-Marc Mommessin and I have been riding Mavericks for the last four years, 5 to 10 times a year depending on the conditions. I personally used to ride the massive Californian wave, trusting only my Naish Sigmas and my Global 5'0. This year, I switched to the Park and the Gun 6'0. The Park gives me reliability when it comes to riding upwind to the outer reef 2+ miles out and some awesome handling in the 30+ wave conditions. The full carbon Gun just makes the ride safer - being able to better handle the monster swell speed, smoothing the face out with so much accuracy and control.
Last Sunday, we knew that we might have the right conditions again as it happens sometimes in April. We drove to Half Moon Bay just to realize that it was insane. 30+ foot sets closing out everywhere with a strong gusty 20+mph wind. The tide didn't help us launch from the jetty, but we managed to do so and aim for the beast. It was certainly not the biggest Mavericks we have seen in four years, but reaching the line-up in those extreme conditions was scary, rough and surreal…
Taking our first wave, we realized that the "Of Men and Mavericks" film crew was there with some jet ski assistance, bringing some human life to a beautiful but usually lonely place. We totaled eleven waves that day with three huge bombs in the board bag! "
